Gameplan for Gold: 4 Strategy Planning Takeaways from Canada’s Olympic Performance

Canada has officially celebrated its most successful Olympics, setting records in medals and high performance across specialties.

Now, of course, this didn’t happen by chance—it’s the result of meticulous planning, expert coaching, and each athlete’s commitment to their big-picture strategy.

This level of success is a powerful reminder that a well-crafted strategy is the foundation of any winning team, sport or business.

A clear strategy is not just a good game plan; it’s the compass that helps you stay focused, maximize your strengths, and overcome obstacles. Without it, even the most talented teams can fall short. But, of course, strategy without action is just another document. And action without a strategy can keep you moving, but that’s not necessarily movement—it’s just doing. So, doing, with a game plan, is where we get our best chance of success.

The level-up? Quantifiable accountability. High-performance athletes rely on their coaches to help guide them and hold them accountable. Expert coaches will use their knowledge and experience to monitor progress, track key stats, and even review the game tape to find ways to test new optimizations. This is the stuff we love. And it’s how expert coaches help create star athletes.

At Wheelhouse, we are BIG fans of all sports, and we’re so proud of our amazing Canadian athletes. Sports are fun! But also, we know and love the parallels of building high-performance players on multiple stages – in athletics, the arts or business. So, we believe there’s a lot we can take away from the incredible performances of our Canadian Olympians this year to collectively remind ourselves of in our own businesses:

  • Set a strategy, stick with it and understand where you’ll make adjustments if needed.
  • Get to work on delivering the gameplan with consistency.
  • Surround yourself with experts who want to see you succeed.
  • Plan. Do. Measure to Grow. Track the important metrics that can help you spot the ways you can tweak your action to find new results.

One of our favourite quotes around here is usually David Ogilvy’s “Don’t bunt. Aim it out of the ballpark,” but in honour of Canada’s athletes, let’s switch to up to “Gameplan to Go for Gold!”.
